‘For centuries we have been the front line of Europe’

The right to a European future, the stolen elections, the 150 consecutive days of protests. Salomé Zurabishvili, whom almost every country in the world still recognises as the legitimate Georgian president, was in Rome for the pope’s funeral and granted L’Europeista an interview on the delicate moment in which the small Caucasian country, already invaded by Putin in 2008, finds itself.
We did not spare her uncomfortable questions, she did not spare us surprising answers.

‘We were Europeans before you were,’ he said proudly: we became a Christian state in the 4th century, and since then we have been the first line against external enemies for centuries.
Even today, ‘the neighbours facing Georgia are the same as those facing Europe’: Turkey, Iran and above all the Russian regime, which after the failure in Ukraine ‘has developed a new strategy based on electoral manipulation, easy and cheap compared to military intervention’.

Evidence that the Georgian elections were stolen? ‘With electronic voting, secrecy was not guaranteed: you could see who each person voted for, in a country where the pressures are so great that the government uses call centres to which it gives private voterinformation ‘.

And Trump? ‘America has not yet abandoned Ukraine and is doing much more for us than Europe’.
