The alternative to sovereignism is not woke culture, but European patriotism

A crucial phase for the European Union

With the approval of the new Von Der Leyen II Commission, the European Union enters a crucial phase marked by vital global challenges and the urgent need for a new political balance.

Europe as a crystal giant

The whirlwind of world geopolitics in recent times, from the war in Ukraine to the tensions in the Middle East, via Trump’s re-election, has made the need for a Europe that is solid and united in its foundations clearer than ever. The idealistic ambitions that far-sightedly drove the formation of the Union in the 1990s are now a thing of the past; nowadays, unity is necessary out of survival instinct.

It is not immediately visible to us EU citizens, accustomed as we are to economicism and perpetual peace, but the current Europe embedded in the global context is a crystal giant, lacking a unified diplomatic stance nor any geopolitical strategy of defence and self-support; hence the times make a drastic change of pace imperative.

Signs of European renewal

The recent continental political evolution would not seem to be going in this direction, with a Commission seen as the weakest ever; however, it could contain within itself the seeds of a profound European renewal, conditioned by a further leap in awareness, courage and foresight on the part of the continent’s political actors.

European patriotism: the real alternative to sovereignism

The new signal is the favourable vote and inclusion in the Executive of the European Conservatives, who, following President Meloni, have largely supported the new Commission. This gesture outlines an important opening towardspro-Europeanism and adherence to unitary values, a potential premise for the definitive metamorphosis of Melonians and allies: from subversive populists to a conservative systemic force.

At this point, a crucial question emerges: the alternative to sovereignism today is not woke culture, but European patriotism. In an era characterised by polarisations and ideological divisions, European patriotism stands as a middle way between the excesses of an isolationist nationalism and a rootless global progressive vision. It is this perspective, rooted in the valorisation of national identities but projected towards a common construction, that could mark the necessary turning point for the Union.

The role of the Conservatives in the future of the EU

Well, as Winston Churchill said, ‘he who does not change his mind changes nothing’. That is why we pro-Europeans cannot but be satisfied with the PM’s change of course. It is now up to ECR and its leader to give credibility to their choices and to take the definitive step towards the line, among other things akin to its tone, of European Patriotism, contributing as protagonists to the process of rebuilding the EU.

Internal divisions and the need for political alignment

In recent years, we have in fact plastically witnessed the split between the Greens and Socialists on the most crucial continental issues: from support for Von Der Leyen, to support forUkraine, via common energy policies, to the creation of a European army and the position regarding the Middle East conflicts.

This mismatch of views exposes the EU to a weakness that only an alignment of European Populars, Liberals and Conservatives can make up for. In the political construction of this front, it is necessary to be inspired by the “red lines” drawn by Manfred Weber (EPP group leader), aimed at excluding the Patriots (Salvini & Orban) and the maximalist Green Left(The Left and the diehard Greens ) in order to mark a change of step towards the definitive emancipation and strategic autonomy of the Union, marked by the realisation of a single European army, the rational and unified management of immigration andenergy self-sufficiency.

Towards a new era for Europe

Making the project of reforming the Union their own, transforming it into a federated and subsidiary entity, could represent the new ‘mature’ horizon of the Conservatives, who in the protection of their roots can find the seed of the New Era for Europe, finally sovereign and independent.
