TikTok, a weapon of Chinese hybrid warfare: Europe should ban it too

In Europe, before any drug can be marketed, it requires countless safety and quality certifications, as well as authorisation by the EMA (European Medicines Agency). Protecting collective health is rightly considered fundamental, it is simple common sense.
So it is – or should be – for every state to guarantee its national security, preventing foreign interference from undermining the foundations of democracy and representative institutions.

TikTok, the search engine of Gen Z

Today, about 40% of young people belonging to Gen Z use TikTok practically like a search engine. This social networking site, owned by ByteDance, a company controlled by the Beijing government and the Chinese Communist Party, is the main source of information for millions of young people all over the planet.

In 2025, China is confirmed as the leading superpower and aims to subvert the world order, to the detriment of the West. Only beautiful souls can fail to notice this. TikTok is one of the main tools of this hybrid war, used to manipulate Western public opinion, collect data and influence the psychic development of the young.

Manipulation through the algorithm

TikTok’s algorithm in Europe is designed to induce addiction by maximising the time users spend collecting data, the ‘oil’ of the 21st century. It also encourages the dissemination of poor quality content, under-stimulating the mind and promoting dangerous trends.
The term ‘brain rot’ has become the symbolic expression of 2024, precisely to indicate the mental degradation induced by the excessive use of this platform. It is no coincidence that the worrying increase of mental disorders such as DCA, ADHD and depression among teenagers is related to the use of TikTok.

Douyin, the opposite side of the same coin

In China, TikTok’s counterpart, Douyin, works in a completely different way. Douyin’s algorithm promotes positive values, culture, patriotism and educational content. Chinese minors are imposed a maximum usage time, to protect their mental and physical health.
This difference is not accidental, but the result of a precise political choice: ByteDance has created an algorithm for Douyin that empowers Chinese youth and another for TikTok that undermines the well-being of the new Western generations.

The courage to act: Europe at the crossroads

I dream of the day when Europe will have the courage to make a political choice similar to that of China. A day when TikTok will be banned from our mobile phones, protecting young people from external manipulation. Only then can we hope to curb the influence of a regime that, while disinforming us, consolidates its global hegemony.
